MORE MORCHEEBA
Morcheeba is a group that I recently was reunited with during a browsing session at Virgin Megastore in downtown San Francisco. It was a big suprise that it was a employee's highlight album in one of the displays. People who work in music stores, even mainstream, have a lot to contribute to a music lover's collection. I'd heard of the band before in the 90s when I was gawking over Portishead and trip-hop jazz-acid style music among other genres. Problem is that back then I didn't pay attention much to Morcheeba.
Well, they've acquired a talented new female vocalist in Daisey Martey. Her voice has a broad range with a sinister-sounding tone. It's hard to describe...you must listen for yourself. I guess she reminds me of the singer from Jefferson Airplane, and in general the album has that psychadelic folk-rock feel partly originated by that 60's SF band.
Morcheeba has a lot to offer and the best thing to come out of England since Antiques Roadshow. Their album, "Antidote" is what I am now the proud owner of. Witty lyrics, great horn transitions, stunning vocals, and a lounge-style rythm feeling that could be cooly placed into any Quentin Tarentino flick. Since no track is dull and I can listen to the set over and over again, I'm giving this one a 10.
